Friday Rage: Focus on the Family are a bunch of assholes

by zunguzungu

I get emails from Focus on the Family, for reasons which are unclear to me. But they’re revelatory enough that I always scan them; these are powerful people with a wide audience. And while I don’t have anything in particular to say about this, I just want to make sure you’re aware that this organization takes it for granted (and trumpets) that discrimination against gay people is itself a moral conviction. It isn’t nearly enough, you see, to simply not be gay yourself; even if you buy the (wrong) reading of the passage in the old testament that it’s Very Important to only to only put the P in the V and nowhere else, after all, it doesn’t necessarily follow that this is a sin that we are required to actively persecute. Except, of course, for these assholes, for whom firing gay people is a moral imperative:

“…a bill that threatens the rights of people of faith is again gaining momentum. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)–a bill which clearly places Christian beliefs on the wrong side of the law–is expected to be voted on this fall. ENDA is a threat to the rights of Christians and would grant special workplace protections to people based on sexual orientation. As a result, Christian business owners could be faced with choosing between their religious beliefs and violating a federal law. ENDA would also prevent religious employers from making hiring and employment decisions based on their moral convictions.”
