Apropos of nothing (except this), on the left, you see the box in which Mansfield, Ohio “death-row inmates are allowed one hour of outdoor recreation per day.”
I don’t know how many people saw the article about the sheriff of Phoenix in the 7/20 New Yorker — there’s an abstract here.
I asked if Arpaio had any nicknames in the tents.
Arpaio, with his inhuman energy, had probably escorted hundreds of camera crews and reporters through his eloved tent jail. Many had been appalled, and produced unflattering stories. Plenty of others had simply served up the Toughest Sheriff shtick with relish… Arpaio’s main concern seems to be just that he is covered. When I first met [his media-relations director] at his offices, she looked at my business card and said, “You’ll probably tear us a new one, but come on in.”
He pushes the limits of banality, I’ll say that.
