And re: Bayart, I too love that &quot;i&#039;m a public intellectual&quot; style of writing he affects, and unlike some of the people I&#039;ve seen adopt it, he seems to have the advantage of having seven different examples from all four compass points to back up every breezy point he makes. In that vein, his &quot;Illusion of Cultural Identity&quot; is a slightly less coherent version of Global Subjects (it&#039;s his take-down of culture, whereas Global Subjects tries to put the pieces back together) but the real fun of it for him, I suspect, is that he gets to show off how ridiculously broadly and deeply conversant he is with global political history. I love/hate him for that.</description>
