re: Sebald, haven’t, but will; thanks for the tip. I definitely need more material for this archive, and I think it’s out there, just somewhat hidden. And re: Bayart, I too love that “i’m a public intellectual” style of writing he affects, and unlike some of the people I’ve seen adopt it, he seems to have the advantage of having seven different examples from all four compass points to back up every breezy point he makes. In that vein, his “Illusion of Cultural Identity” is a slightly less coherent version of Global Subjects (it’s his take-down of culture, whereas Global Subjects tries to put the pieces back together) but the real fun of it for him, I suspect, is that he gets to show off how ridiculously broadly and deeply conversant he is with global political history. I love/hate him for that.

couple of quick thoughts (since it’s all i can afford)
1. on aerial bombing/savagery/chaos, have you seen Sebald’s *Natural History of Destruction*?
2. I thought your last post was brilliant.
3. I am beginning to share your love for Bayart: “unless we abandon ourselves to an eschatology of globalization … ” (p.279)
