Yeah, that's a good one. Ford made a lot of that kind of stuff, apparently, even filming war footage in the middle of the battle of Midway. And there's a Korea prop film out there somewhere too. It's an interesting way to frame his other work, though I'm not sure I've got enough of a handle on him to do it yet.

That was my impression too, but then isn't that the whole JW schtick? Being postmodern means you never have to ask about intent, and that seemed to be what made Buffy work (both uber LA and a play *on* LA). As for space cowboys, well...

As for The Wire, expect a flurry of posts on it once it's become thoroughly passe. Until then, nothing but John Ford, all the time.

I crush on Jill Lepore.

Having said that, I find the Firefly = CW discussions a tad overblown (big fan of JW, of course). The conceit of Firefly with its creolizations, its frontierizations and its marginalizations (to coin some -zations) ended up being just that - conceits. The mandarin-only cusses were used precisely as a scritwriter's crutches rather than a commentary on the ability of vernacular versus the classical tongues. Similarly, the drawls and the CW ended up being painted stages for the actors - cardboard and plaster.

I know that JW attracts a prodigious amount of academic fanbase but I have noticed a tendency of ascribing intent where there is none. At least thats how I "read" it.

Now if we can turn the conversation to The Wire....

After it became clear why you thought of Firefly in reference to the post, I googled and found these posts dealing with Firefly as civil war allegory.

Hmmm, how would that work? It's obviously a cowboy in space type deal, and both of those genres are *obviously* veiled allegories for colonial expansion, but I think I'll have to bow to someone's superior expertise. Maybe you? No tag backs!
